In part one Achieving Success, we defined success, gave two approaches to success, and examples of how to achieve success. These steps make success your friend.
Part two will explain how small wins create big habits, how the guidance of mentors will accelerate success, and how to curate your “feed” to consume better content.
Small wins day after day compound into big habits that lead to BIG results.
Habits
“Tiny changes, remarkable results” Atomic Habits by James Clear.
Clear goes into great detail on how building habits starting with the end in mind will have remarkable results.
Atomic Habits provides a great framework for developing a habit and how to scale it. It is how I approach developing habits and strengthening others. For example, in writing; I started with 2-5 minutes a day, every day. I would write about whatever came to mind. Slowly that habit changed and led to me writing in a more structured manner to produce short-form content to publish on Substack.
The end goal was established before I even started writing. The end goal?
I want to write a book.
Become the type of person that writes every day, that’s the type of person that writes books.
If you want to become healthier or lose weight what kind of person do you have to become? A healthy person might go to the gym every day. Start with a small win, like doing 5 push-ups every day. Then 10, 15, 20, and so on. Small habits turn into big results.
If you want to be more generous what kind of person do you have to become? Practice giving and generosity with small acts first and then scale up.
Start with the end in mind.
You use this same framework to compound your efforts and create habits that will support your success. Learn More from James Clear.
Mentors
A mentor is a person who has achieved success and is willing to help you achieve success by mentoring you during the process.
I have learned many skills from mentors, blue-collar workers can consider their foremen as mentors. Apprentices learn the trade or skill from mentors. I know I want to teach people especially if it’s something I’m good at. Mentors guide you and help you learn from mistakes they may have made in their journeys.
You probably have a mentor or two in your life already. Mentors can come and go, and some mentors are unofficial. Regardless, a mentor will guide you and help you achieve success. Think about the mentors you already have in your life and what mentors you want to add to your life. Think Yoda and Luke Skywalker, Mr. Miyagi and the Karate Kid, Warren Buffet, and Steve Jobs.
Consumption and Your Feed
According to the data collected from oberlo.com, the US population spent roughly 8 hours a day consuming digital media. The music you listen to, the shows you watch, the people you follow, and the articles you read all play a part in shaping you and your mindset.
What’s the first post you see if you open Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook right now? Is it something that supports the success you are trying to achieve?
I have deleted apps from my phone because I caught myself spending too much time on them. Another great way to spend less time on apps is to set a time limit (iPhone makes this easy). I also will unfollow content that isn’t great for my mindset. Take some time to curate your feed to stay informed, educated, inspired, and happy.
Conclusion
Success will become your friend if you start with small habits and continue to increase your efforts. Additionally, a mentor that has achieved success in a similar fashion or has skills that are superior to yours will improve and potentially accelerate your path to success. Lastly, curating your digital media feed will help improve your mindset and inspire your journey towards success.
